Post Treatment Care After Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA / EVLT) is a minimally invasive technique and hence do not require major post procedure care. Nevertheless, it is a medical procedure and hence some basic care and adherence to doctor instructions is required.

Immediately After

  • Immediately after the procedure, the patient will be made to walk for 20 minutes to 40 minutes. This reduces the superficial venous pressure and serves to increase venous circulation in thigh and calf muscles.
  • While you may resume most of your regular activities, it is advised to not drive after any medical procedure.

Next Two Days

  • Put ice pack during the day – for not more than 10 minutes at a time – on the area to avoid swelling.
  • Just like we do for any small everyday injuries, keep the incision dry and out of water. Avoid wetting the incision area till bandages are removed.
  • Wear compression stockings. These stockings keep the leg gently squeezed. This helps to prevent swelling and stop blood from clotting or pooling.
  • To improve venous flow, walk & do light exercise multiple times a day. Do not strain and if tired, rest.
  • Do not lift weights.
  • Though unlikely but monitor the site for infection. If experience new swelling, redness; connect with your doctor for medical prescription.

Next Two Weeks

  • Continue use of Compression stocking.
  • Walk & exercise regularly – approx. 3 to 4 times a day for 20 minutes each time. However, avoid lifting weights for one week.
  • Do not sit for long periods. If possible, raise your legs while resting.
  • Avoid very hot baths. This is to speed up incision area healing process.

After a Fortnight (15 days)

  • You mostly would have a follow-up consultation with the doctor.
  • All things normal, no specific precaution would be advised except any medications and use of stockings.
  • You will be advised to increase exercise timing as per your choice. You can gradually start lifting weights once the doctor confirm post follow up inspection.

EVLT is a very safe procedure, and patients do not experience any issues post the treatment. However, if you experience any new swelling at the incision site do get in touch with the doctor to rule out any infection.
